Door sensor

It is possible to use a wireless router with OpenWrt or maybe even DD-WRT, rip out one of the LEDs and attach a sensor to it. Then serve a web page that outputs the status of that sensor.

It is also possible to use LEDS for other signalling devices

The UW 3d printer club could also use one of these devices.
