Reset a MacBook

Do this upon receiving the unit on return or as a donation.

To reset a MacBook to factory defaults, follow these steps:

1. Restart the MacBook and hold down Command (⌘) + R immediately after you hear the startup sound.

2. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe.

3. In macOS Recovery, select Disk Utility and click Continue.

4. Choose your startup disk (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click Erase.

5. Format it as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click Erase.

6. After erasing, exit Disk Utility.

7. Select Reinstall macOS and follow the prompts to reinstall the operating system.

Your MacBook will be reset to factory settings.
